?What was the creation process like??
Having an initial background in poetry, Nicole Krauss found the transition to fiction a constant learning of how it will work. The years of hard work as she engaged herself in poetry were not drained out of uselessness, since the influence of her study about the genre is evident in all three of her novels. Unlike typical fiction writers, she does not map characters or plot the storyline ahead. She started the novel in spring of 2002, a period which strengthens the melancholy of her theme. She was not naturally inspired to write, since her debut novel?s success brought up expectations for the second project where she earned a pricey book deal with W.W. Norton. She felt like giving up after a hundred pages of not knowing where she was going with her book.
Leo Gursky?s voice was her saving grace. She felt him to be more alive than any character she had written?the voice of an 80-year-old man from Poland. The vignettes she wrote about Leo were too insufficient to become a book so she picked up another voice that could be Leo?s partner as he coped with life?s hard times
