Catherine had demanded her house keys. An hysterical Leila Doves had begged Catherine to finish her wedding dress. She was sure that Melody wouldnt be back in time before her dream wedding. Catherine of course was only too pleased to help.

Melody opened her front door and felt herself relax. She was home. Leilas dress was still in centre stage in the living room and assessing it quickly Melody knew she could finish it in no time at all. She dropped her bags, flung off her coat, and began adjustments, humming as she worked. Kieran was staying at a hotel in the city centre and had accepted her invitation to dinner at hers this evening. Little darts of excitement and nervousness twinged in her stomach at the thought of it an evening of just her and Kieran together in the intimacy of her small dining room. She was busy patching together a menu in her mind when Leila Doves arrived. She almost ran to Melody, gave her a big hug, and blew her nose noisily. She was crying, Oh, oh Melody. I cant believe youre back. Youve no idea how horrible its been waiting for you and wondering if youd ever return. Ive had the most ghastly migraines thinking about my poor dress, wilting on its stand, half done. And then Sam and I had the most awful fight. Here she shook her head vigorously and smeared her mascara with the back of her hand, But its back on now, so you do need to finish it. You must!

The wedding dress was hardly wilting on its mannequin, nor was it half done. In fact, with a huge sense of relief Melody realised it was almost ready. She still wasnt one hundred per cent pleased with the line of the bodice and she would have to take up the hem of the skirt by a few millimetres to adjust for the ivory silk shoes that Leila had chosen. But suddenly she was desperate to be done with it and Leila and her on/off fiancé Sam.

You know Leila, it wasnt very nice of you to ask Catherine Sommerlee to finish it for you, Melody kept her tone mild despite her re-emerging annoyance at it, I did tell you Id be back in time. I wouldnt have let you down.

Oh gosh, no I didnt do that. How could you think it of me? Leilas big wet eyes were round and innocent, No, what happened was I was in Dundee at a wedding show, I needed to get my wedding favours. I decided on the most gorgeous little velvet pouches, each with five almonds, she paused to press her splayed hand to her chest, remembering presumably how lovely the favours were.

And you were there with Catherine? Melody prompted.

No, no. She introduced herself and gave me her business card. It was so wonderful meeting her, especially as she had a collection of dresses on display. I couldnt believe it when she spoke to me. She even helped me pick my favours, how fantastic was that! She told me she knew you were designing my wedding dress but that you probably wouldnt get back in time to finish it. I almost died when she said that.

Melody handed Leila a paper hanky and steered her away from the delicate ivory silk of the wedding dress. Make up stains would be a disaster at this stage.

But then marvellously she offered to do it herself to help both of us out. She said you would want her to help me. Was it wrong?0
