José María Balcells Nacido(s) para el luto focuses on the significance and importance of the image of the bull and the art of bullfighting in the life and poetry of Miguel Hernández. This book-length study explores the many bullfighting scenarios that the poet knew, in order to deeply study those texts inspired by, or directly dealing with bullfighting. The book also analyzes all those poems by Hernández in which the bull, and bullfighting itself, acquire a theological, erotic and totemic dimension. Nacido(s) para el luto suggests that a literary universe permeated by the bull and the art of bullfighting articulates much of the poetry of Miguel Hernández, a poet who seemed to anticipate the fate he was tragically doomed to share with the bull, sacrificed in the arena.
