The objective of this doctoral thesis is to conduct a detailed examination of the history of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana and his collection of portraits of 19th century Spanish painting. This institution hoards an important collection of European painting of those years and particularly the Spanish nineteenth-century painting stands out for the great volume and the value of his pieces. We analyze the portraits executed by artists of the stature of Vicente López Portaña (1772-1850), José de Madrazo y Agudo (1781-1859), José Gutiérrez de la Vega (1791-1865), Antonio María Esquivel y Suárez de Urbina (1806-1857), Federico de Madrazo y Küntz (1815-1894), Dióscoro Teófilo Puebla Tolín (1831-1901), Vicente Palmaroli González (1834-1896), Mariano Fortuny Marsal (1838-1874), Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta (1841-1920), Ulpiano Fernández-Checa y Saiz (1860-1916), Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923), Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa (1871-1959) and others. We also explore wealthy Cuban families interest in this pictorial genre whose works were commissioned to the most prestigious Iberian artists of the century. At the same time, we trace the influence of the local elites within the Spanish colonial system and its links with the metropolitan oligarchy and how this demonstrates the close relationships between art production and symbols of power.
