Apocalyptic prophecies fulfi l a double role. On the one hand, if there are so many saints and prophets announcing them, perhaps they are not so far off the track. The arguments from this point of view deal with a transformation in our way of life rather than the physical disappearance of the world or the human species, which would surely not be so bad. If the prophecies are nonsense, on the other hand, so are our fears if we do not understand the essential difference between the problems that confront us and the myths we construct upon them.
Only a few of us ask ourselves, however, what science can tell us on the subject. Not about the possibilities of a social revolution that will change the ruling social structure in such and such a nation, but of real problems that threaten the planet Earth and ourselves, the only intelligent creature (although, looking at our behaviour, this remark needs qualifying) settled on it.
The Natural sciences have advanced enough to let us see the phenomena, both internal and external to our planet, that are a danger to our survival on it and, at the same time, they disclose the existing options for combating them.
