In bed late that night Nikki remembered the sadness on Tom?s face when he?d said he would be gone in a year. If it made him so sad, why did he have to go? Perhaps he was going to be a great orthopaedic surgeon. He was certainly a great GP. Who could tell which was the right career?
Then she thought some more. She realised that he hadn?t answered her question. There was something that he was keeping from her. She wished she knew what it was.
The following Tuesday, by chance she met Meriel in town. They stopped to chat a while, and Meriel asked Nikki what was to happen to Toby.
?He?s volunteered to go back into hospital,? Nikki said. ?Joe?s arranged for him to try a new drug regime ? perhaps they can get his behaviour under control again.?
?I hope so. I want to see him at the balls ? but I don?t want to see you lying on the floor again.? Nikki could tell that Meriel meant this, and she felt rather pleased.
They chatted inconsequentially for a couple of minutes and then Meriel said, with an air of great unconcern, ?Seen much of Tom Murray? I thought he might ring me, but he hasn?t.?
?He?s been very busy,? said Nikki, knowing this was true. ?Probably he just hasn?t had time.?
?I guess so. It?s not a great affair, of course, but I like him.?
